Biology
Are you interested in unravelling the mysteries of life, from the tiniest cells to the grandeur of ecosystems? The A level in Biology sets you on a path of discovery that takes you through molecules and gene technology to biodiversity and immunity. But it’s not just about the study of living organisms; you’ll develop transferable skills in maths and practical techniques too.
A-Level Biology
This course will suit you if you wish to have career or study a degree in a biological science, and will enable you get an introduction to more complex theory than you will have covered at GCSE. You will also develop the necessary practical and analytical skills needed for further study.
On A Level Biology you will study a wide range of key elements, such as human, animal and plant cells; biological molecules, genetics and ecology.
At the end of two years you will sit examinations, so you will need to acquire a thorough understanding of all the different topics you have studied. You will also benefit from this A Level if you enjoy the intellectual challenge of the work.

- This course is available with two examination boards and specifications:
- 1. UK Students: Edexcel 9BI0
- 2. International Students: Edexcel YBI11
Unit 1: Molecules, Diet, Transport and Health
- Molecules, Transport and Health
- Membranes, Proteins, DNA and Gene Expression
Unit 2: Cells, Development, Biodiversity and Conservation
- Cell Structure, Reproduction and Development
- Plant Structure and Function, Biodiversity and Conservation
Unit 3: Practical Skills in Biology I
- Understanding of procedures and techniques from practical experiments covered in units 1 and 2
Unit 4: Energy, Environment, Microbiology and Immunity
- Energy Flow, Ecosystems and the Environment
- Microbiology, Immunity and Forensics
Unit 5: Respiration, Internal Environment, Coordination and Gene Technology
- Respiration, Muscles and the Internal Environment
- Coordination, Response and Gene Technology
Unit 6: Practical Skills in Biology II
- Understanding of procedures and techniques from practical experiments covered in units 4 and 5
To study 3 A Levels:
5 GCSEs at grade 5 or higher, including English Language and Maths
Please note:
BTEC or vocational qualifications will not be accepted in place of GCSEs
Additional Requirements
9-5 in Maths
9-5 in Biology if taking separate sciences
9-5 in Double Science / Core Science AND Additional Science (not applied or vocational Science)
